Seian was a famous physician who also authored several books about edible wild plants that would be suitable foods during times of famine. This gallery shows the 104 pictures included in one of these books entitled Bikō Sōmoku Zu (Illustrated Guide to Plants for Famine Relief). It was later revised by his son and his son-in-law and published in 1833. The pictures were drawn by Shimei Kitagō. Shimei drew the shapes of his picture subjects using the semi-realistic Kanō style but only colored them in shades of gray. Click on a picture to enlarge it.
